Arabian music has a long tradition that reaches back to before the Roman era.  Although the pure classical forms have mostly faded the unique scale and interval structurs have remained and give the music much of itís modal flavor.  Although this music was traditionally built around a solo improvisational style, today you will hear a fusion of the musicís traditional roots with a European influence.  The Arabic scales are based on scales of up to 24 notes as opposed to the European 8 note scale. The various modes of these scales are easily recognizable to even the untrained ear as Middle Eastern in flavor.
